Pelada Film Returns to Denver on July 13
Proceeds benefit the 2011 Paris Homeless World Cup & Denver Street Soccer
Jul 2nd 2011

If you missed the one-time screening of Pelada in the Denver area last year, or just can’t wait to watch it again, then you are in luck! On Wednesday, July 13, the award-winning soccer documentary will be shown at 7:00 p.m. at Red Rocks Church in Golden. The proceeds from the event will benefit the 2011 Homeless World Cup in Paris this August as well as Denver Street Soccer.

Pelada is a must-see for every fan of the beautiful game. The documentary follows Luke and Gwendolyn, two former college soccer stars, as they travel to 25 countries to chase the game. Tucked away on alleys, side streets, and concrete courts, people play improvised soccer games across the globe. In Brazil, the word for “pick-up game” is “pelada,” which literally means “naked” – the game stripped down to its core. It is the version of soccer played by anyone, anywhere – and it’s the window into lives all around the world. From prisoners in Bolivia to moonshine brewers in Kenya, from freestylers in China to women who play in hijab in Iran, Pelada is the story of the people who play the world’s game.

This fundraiser screening of Pelada is a chance for Colorado soccer fans to share their love for the beautiful game with disadvantaged soccer players across the world, giving them the opportunity to change their lives through the game. Proceeds from the film will go directly to helping homeless soccer teams from 64 countries cover the costs of traveling to France for the 2011 Homeless World Cup in Paris from August 21-28.

In its 9 years of existence, over 50,000 homeless people have been involved in the program, and more than 600 players have the honor of representing their nation at the international street soccer tournament each year. The Homeless World Cup harnesses the power of soccer to motivate people for change, teach important life lessons and skills, and reward achievement both on and off the field. The impact of the program has been unprecedented; over 70% of participants have changed their lives for the better by getting off the street, enrolling in school, getting jobs, reconnecting with family and building self-esteem.

Look for Amber from Denver Street Soccer at the BSG tailgate before the Rapids v Houston game on Sunday July 3rd. She will have a table giving out jello shots in return for donations as an additional fundraiser for the Homeless World Cup and handing out flyers with info about the Pelada screening.
